Car phone mounts compared: vent, dash, windshield and magnetic

Back in 2020 we bought a whole bunch of car phone holders to see which ones actually held on. The lesson still applies: the right mount depends on your car, your phone and how you drive. What has changed is magnets.

Air vent mounts

Pros: cheap, easy to fit and they keep the phone near eye level. Cons: today’s heavy phones can make them droop, they may block airflow, and hot air from the heater can warm the phone in winter.

Dashboard mounts

Suction or adhesive bases are stable and flexible to position. On textured dashboards suction cups may fail — use the adhesive disc that often comes in the box.

Windshield mounts

Very stable with long arms, but they can block your view and are restricted in some countries and states. Check local rules before mounting anything on the glass.

Cup-holder and CD-slot mounts

Good for cars with awkward vents or dashboards. Cup-holder mounts put the phone low, which is harder to glance at.

Magnetic mounts: MagSafe, Qi2 and Pixelsnap

Snap-on mounts are now the most convenient choice: the phone attaches in one motion and charging versions top it up as you drive. iPhones have MagSafe, and Google’s Pixel phones have had Pixelsnap magnets built in since the Pixel 10 — the Pixel 11 and 11 Pro also support the faster 25W Qi2.2 standard. Many other Android phones still need a magnetic case or ring — check before you buy a mount.

Safety first

  • Place the phone where you can see it without looking far from the road.
  • Set navigation before you start driving.
  • Never hold the phone while driving — in many places it is illegal.
